Miss Eno's Class
Welcome parents, guardians, friends, family members and students! Within this tab you will find resources and information that will be useful to you and your child as you help your child strive for success in Miss Eno's fifth grade class.
WOW! I am PROUD! (11/15/16)
I have to start these few updates by sharing some things with you all that have just warmed my heart and made me so proud to be teaching this particular group of children. This will be a running list of things that have made me smile and be proud of the children you are raising.
-your children love when one another get something correct
-when students don't get something correct SO many of them say, "Its okay, try again."
-many of your children have been practicing redoing things in a kinder way by rephrasing something unkind so it comes out better the second time.... and guess what? I only taught them how to do this twice! They took it and are running with it on their own!
-your children walk so quietly and respectfully in the hallway really showing that they care about the learners around them
-your children politely remind one another of expectations so they don't need to be reminded by me
-your children run to line up after recess before I beat them to line and it makes me laugh every single day
-I get at least seven hugs when your kids leave the room every day
-I get the best greetings and compliments in the morning
-your children know when I mean business and get frustrated, yet they don't take it out on me.... we walked to Spanish last week so loudly that I feared we disrupted every classroom around us. Frustrated that it seemed they had forgotten all they learned and in a very firm voice, I shared with students we would be practicing walking correctly in the hallway for five minutes after lunch. When most students would whine, complain and glare at me, I turned around and I still heard soft sweet voices from your children whispering "Bye Miss Eno we can do it better next time."
-your children are so quiet in the bathroom and waiting outside for the restrooms as they take turns
-your children work so hard to get their work done correctly; so many ask to do extra work (WOW)
-your children take the best notes during reading, math, and science (EVEN when I don't directly ask them to... talk about ownership over their learning)
-your students signed a group card to me when I went home sick last week and presented it to me the next day
-your children spend their time at the end of the school day helping pick up the classroom, even when it is not always their individual mess
-your children are models in the hallway and refrain from playing and talking to other students in fifth grade
-your kids ask questions about me which really shows they care to get to know more about who I am, and this means a lot to me
-your children demonstrate a higher level of thinking and really reflect on their behavior, even coming up to me to either apologize or clarify a mistake or misunderstanding
-I have received so many kind notes and drawings that I will always SAVE... they really show that they know me too
-your children get genuinely excited when we have class discussions (especially in math and science) and they have the opportunity to explain their thinking... as a teacher it makes me extremely proud
Last but not least, even though I am tired every morning as I drive into school, seeing the faces of our children walk through the door every day truly makes my heart happy. I feel as though together, your children and I, are developing an atmosphere that I am striving so hard to create: one that is positive, friendly and fun, safe, community driven and goal-oriented. I really hope your child feels as though they are being taken care of in this classroom because their academic, personal, and emotional needs are of my utmost concern.

Update on Behavior Charts (11/15/16)
As many of you have noticed, behavior charts have been looking slightly different over the last couple of weeks. I have been attempting to figure out what works and what does not work for students, parents, and myself. Filling out and checking behavior charts does take a long time for 26 students daily but I feel it is extremely important for us to communicate back and forth so you know how your child is performing in terms of our three class rules: respecting and caring for adults and peers, making responsible use of time and materials, and showing a dedication to academics. I have decided to glue in small behavior charts daily into your child's agenda. This way you can see that your child is filling out their homework nightly. You can also see on the behavior chart that I included a part where your child records their reading. Please review your child's homework, the reading they have done, and their performance for the day.
In class when students need to take a break in the classroom they need to fill out a reflection form. This reflection form allows them to take ownership over their own behavior. This will be stapled into their agenda and it will need to be signed when it is sent home. You may see an additional behavior slip sent home. This is a written warning and is given when your child is given numerous reminders throughout the day and needs additional contact home because their actions and or behaviors caused major distractions throughout a class period or throughout the day. I do not expect to be sending many of these home but I wanted to make you all aware of what these were so you know what to expect when you see them.
Additionally, I have decided that if your child comes in without a signature on their behavior chart it will be something the student and I will be discussing for a couple of minutes after lunch. The purpose of getting a signature on a behavior chart that does not contain all "excellents" is to reflect on their misbehavior(s) from the day before. These few minutes of discussions in school will substitute the time that your child missed communicating with you outside of school by asking you to sign their behavior chart and talk to them about their behavior. Through this process, I am trying to get your child to take more ownership over getting their behavior chart signed. Furthermore this process will allow them to reflect on their actions during the school day so they can become productive and responsible citizens. When they do not get it signed now, they will not want to spend a few minutes reflecting on their behavior from the day prior with me. My hope is that they will seek you out more and make it a priority to get it signed (as most of the students do anyways). Again, I simply wanted to let you know what was going on now! If you have any questions feel free to email me or message me on remind (remember when you message me the messages go just to me and they are private).
Reminder on Actions Not Permitted in Class:
-flipping water bottles upside down repeatedly throughout the day to get them to land right-side-up has become a continuous distraction.... if this continues I will ask that water bottles be kept in cubbies and students only ask to go to their cubbies to get a drink of water
-tapping penciles and hitting desks like a drum... I can see we will have a class full of musicians but please discuss with your child (if you notice that they do this at home too) that this can be very distracting to the person teaching and other students learning. I have things students can hold on to to keep them busy as they work, if they can manage them responsibly
-threatening in any capacity.... whether threatening in a joking way, threatening with body language, or threatening in a serious way this type of behavior is not tolerated at Millbrook Elementary Magnet School especially in Miss Eno's class where my goal is to create an inclusive classroom environment where people feel safe and respect. Please discuss with your child ways they can control their tempers and react in different manners when they become frustrated
-talking back and eye rolling... my goal is for students to begin not just acting like Middle School students but as respectful and kind individuals. I know that talking back and rolling does not bode well for your child at home and if you could remind your child that their job is to treat me with just as much respect as they treat you, I believe they would really begin to see they benefit even more from this type of mutually beneficial relationship.
Note: These are four of the most common behaviors/actions that I am seeing repeated throughout the day despite reminders and redirections. When you see notes regarding these actions on behavior charts please know what I am referring to now.

Classroom Wish List (11/15/16)
Now that it is in the second quarter we are in need of some more supplies. I know in these times not many of us have much money to spare but if we can all chip in and provide what we can it would make it so your students have access to the materials they desperately need to learn. Yes, you may see brand name items below. I have a reason for this though. Although brand names are more expensive, they last much longer and word far better. If you can help, please send your child in with as little or as much of the following items:
-Ticonderoga brand pencils (as many as you can get, we are OUT OF PENCILS)
-student scissors
-Elmer's glue sticks
-one subject spiral notebooks
-composition notebooks
-paper towel
-non-toxic wipes (baby wipes will work)
-Kleenex
-eraser caps
-small circle stickers (smiles, stars, any design, etc) (ask your child because they know what they will be used for)

Brag Tags
Every time Miss Eno catches your child following a class expectation, modeling one of the learner profiles, being a good friend, accomplishing a goal, or a number of other positive classroom behaviors your child can earn a BRAG TAG! Simply a piece of paper that shows off what your child was doing well at that particular moment. This piece of paper gets hole-punched and then placed on their necklace. For every BRAG TAG your child earns, he/she also earns a star hole-punch in their "punch card." When they receive five stars they may earn a reward!! These rewards may be things like eating lunch in the classroom with two friends, wearing a hat in the class for a day, teaching a lesson for seven minutes, bringing board games outside for recess, a homework pass (with your signature of approval), using pen all day, sitting with a pillow, etc. Eventually we will increase the number of stars needed to ten in order to earn a reward... be ready for that!!
